Parental Role
Your role as parents is especially important
during your child's early years. As a parent you
are in the best position to recognize early signs
of drug and alcohol abuse. Do not deny the evidence
if you suspect that your child is using drugs
or alcohol.
If you believe there is a problem, you should
explain to your children the legal repercussions
of using drugs and alcohol. A conviction related
to a drug or alcohol offense can lead to time
in prison or cost someone a scholarship or a job.
Inform your children that you love them and want
them to be happy and healthy. Let your children
know that they can talk to you about drugs and
alcohol whenever then want, rather than giving
a one-time speech. Remember to set a good example
for your child. Don't use drugs, even prescription
drugs or alchol in ways that will give your child
the message that drugs and alchol are a way to
cope with the stresses of everyday life.
If you do suspect drug or alcohol abuse
by your child, consider the following steps:
Become knowledgeable about drugs and the early
warning signs of abuse.
Learn the extent of drug problems in your community
and schools.
Consult with other parents and your child's school
officials.
Get involved with community watch groups and attend
local beat meetings.
Discuss your suspicions with your child in a calm,
objective manner.
Do not confront your child while he or she might
be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Do not be afraid to seek advice and assistance
from drug treatment professionals.
If you do suspect
drug or alcohol abuse by your child educate yourself.
